Moving house in Auckland involves more than booking a truck. Between organising utilities, notifying Inland Revenue and your bank, and figuring out what actually needs to be packed first, it's easy for something to slip through the cracks. This checklist breaks the process into manageable stages, whether you're moving across Mount Eden or relocating from out of town.

6 to 8 Weeks Before Moving Day
- Get a moving quote from local movers Auckland trusts, and lock in your preferred date early. Weekends book out fastest.
- Start decluttering room by room; anything you won't use in your new home doesn't need to travel with you.
- Research your new suburb's rubbish and recycling collection days if you're relocating across Auckland.
2 to 4 Weeks Before
- Order moving boxes and packing materials sized to your home.
- Begin packing non-essential rooms first: spare rooms, garages, out-of-season clothing.
- Update your address with Inland Revenue, your bank, insurance providers and any subscriptions.
- Arrange internet and power connection at your new address.
1 Week Before
- Confirm your booking details with your moving company: time, address, access notes (stairs, lifts, parking).
- Pack a "first night" box with essentials: toiletries, chargers, medications, a change of clothes and basic kitchen items.
- Label every box clearly by room to make unloading faster.
Moving Day
- Do a final walkthrough of your old property, checking cupboards, the garage and the letterbox.
- Keep valuables, documents and medications with you rather than in the truck.
- Confirm final placement of large furniture with your crew as it's unloaded, so you're not rearranging heavy items later.
After You've Moved
- Update your driver's licence and vehicle registration address (required within statutory timeframes in New Zealand).
- Register with a new GP if you've moved outside your previous area.
- Unpack the essentials box first, then work room by room rather than trying to finish everything in one day.
